Root Canal Treatment

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Root Canal Treatment is needed when the dental pulp inside of your tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This is often caused by tooth decay and is unlikely to go away on its own.

This infection is likely to spread to your other teeth and gums if left untreated, so it is of upmost importance to receive root canal treatment before more damage is caused.
Root canal treatment often conjures up a frightening picture in your mind, of pain, sharp instruments and multiple visits to the dentist. However, with recent advances in dentistry, root canal treatment is not only painless, but also in most cases, can be done in one sitting.

What exactly is Root Canal Treatment?
Basically a tooth is made up of three layers of tissue. The 2 outer hard tissues are enamel and dentin and the innermost soft tissue layer is called as the pulp. The pulp resides inside the root canals. This dental pulp contains of nerves, blood vessels, ground substance, interstitial fluid and other cellular components. The pulpal tissue is responsible for the pain and the sensitivity that we feel with the tooth.
When this pulpal tissue is inflamed/diseased/infected due to the above mentioned reasons, root canal treatment is the treatment of choice.

When do you need a root canal treatment?

  • 1. Extensive Decay / Cavity.

Extensive dental decay which reaches upto the pulp tissue inside the tooth requires Root canal treatment. The bacterial infection is passed on from the dental decay to the infected pulp causing pain and extreme sensitivity.

  • 2. Trauma / Blow to a tooth.

Trauma or blow to the tooth can damage the nerve inside the tooth without even exposing the pulp tissue. At times, the trauma can be extensive. In this case, the fractured portion exposes the pulp tissue giving extreme pain and needing root canal treatment.

  • 3. Discolored tooth.

Discolored teeth are a result of a trauma endured in the past. In a situation when trauma is endured on a tooth but nerve is not exposed, there is internal damage. This internal damage shows discolored tooth as a symptom after a long period of time. The nerve is already damaged at the time of trauma and hence needs a root canal treatment.

  • 4. Pus formation

Pus formation at the tip of the root or roots is a result of bacterial infection spread from the pulp tissue. It may be due to extensive dental decay or some trauma to the tooth in the past. The pus can be resolved with root canal treatment.

  • 5. Attrition / abrasion

Attrition or abrasion is loss of tooth structure due to daily use of teeth. The loss of tooth structure is more if a person suffers from bruxism or clenching of teeth. After a certain period of time, the loss of tooth structure is so much that the pulp tissue is exposed. At this stage, the tooth requires root canal treatment.

  • 6. Fractured tooth

Fracture tooth may be due to trauma, accident or even by biting on something hard. At times, the trauma can be extensive. In this case, the fractured portion exposes the pulp tissue giving extreme pain and needing root canal treatment.

  • 7. Prolonged dental sensitivity

Prolonged dental sensitivity is extremely painful and irritating. It can be due to extreme bruxism or clenching of teeth or erosion of teeth. In cases where other treatments like desensitizing agents, toothpastes, gels do not work on extreme sensitivity, it is advised to undergo root canal treatment.

  • 8. Failed dental fillings

Any and every tooth is prone to dental decay if oral hygiene is not maintained. Dental fillings are done when the dental decay is not deep. But if the surrounding tooth structure is not kept clean there are chances of secondary cavity. In this case, the dental filling fails and the secondary decay may be extensive enough to involve the pulp tissue. This requires root canal treatment.

  • 9. Teeth with severe gum diseases

Severe gum diseases affect the roots and its surrounding structure. Pus is formed at the tip of the root of the affected tooth. The pus can be resolved by deep cleaning of the tooth and root canal treatment.
